Protect Your Finances: FBI Reports 53% Increase in U.S. Crypto Scam Losses to $3.94 Billion in 2023

A recent report released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) revealed that in 2023, losses from crypto investment scams in the U.S. reached a staggering $3.94 billion. This marks a significant increase of 53% compared to the previous year’s total of $2.57 billion.

The overall losses from investment frauds in the country also saw a significant rise of 38%, totaling $4.57 billion in 2023 compared to $3.31 billion in 2022, according to the bureau’s Internet Crime Report 2023. This highlights a growing concern for fraudulent activities in the online investment landscape, with cryptocurrency scams being a major contributing factor.

The report pointed out that fraudsters are utilizing custodial accounts at financial institutions for cryptocurrency exchanges or third-party payment processors. They may also opt to have targeted individuals directly send funds to these platforms, where the funds are quickly dispersed, providing perpetrators with a greater chance of getting away with their crimes.

Investment scams have rapidly become the most common type of internet crime in 2023, accounting for over one third of the total $12.5 billion reported losses. This clearly showcases the prevalence of this type of fraud and the need for more stringent measures to tackle it.
