Recently, a technical proposal aimed at enhancing Ethereum wallets faced some resistance, sparking a response from a notable figure in the blockchain community—Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum.

Reportedly, Buterin devised an alternative solution in just 22 minutes.

Last month, Ethereum developers decided to incorporate Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 3074, which allows certain wallet functions to be managed by smart contracts, into the next significant network upgrade, known as the Pectra hard fork.

This initiative is part of a broader technological shift known as account abstraction. This approach transforms Ethereum externally-owned accounts (EOA) into smart contract wallets, aiming to make Ethereum wallets more user-friendly.

Following the release of EIP-3074, opinions within the community were divided. Some applauded the proposal, while others were concerned about its incompatibility with an earlier proposal, ERC-4437, which has been live on the mainnet since February 2023.

A few days post-release of EIP-3074, Buterin, along with another developer, introduced EIP-7702, providing an alternative for the impending Pectra upgrade.

Ethereum core developer Ansgar Dietrichs, a co-author of both EIP-3074 and EIP-7702 with Buterin, mentioned in an interview that the latest proposal resulted from about a week of engagement in the account abstraction research discussion.

Dietrichs noted that once the research concluded, Buterin quickly drafted the new EIP. “I challenged him to do it in 15 minutes,” Dietrichs recalled. “It took him 22.”

Since the introduction of EIP-7702, it has garnered significant praise and is expected to supplant EIP-3074.

Christine Kim, Vice President of Research at Galaxy, highlighted the positive reception to Buterin's alternative in a research note dated May 20, stating, “There is positive sentiment among all stakeholder groups.”

Jarrod Watts, Developer Relations Engineer at Polygon, noted on X that “It's one of the most impactful changes Ethereum is going to have... EVER.”

For the time being, EIP-3074 is slated to go live with the Pectra upgrade. However, this may change as the specifics of EIP-7702 get refined.

“People are still understanding the exact differences between 3074 and 7702,” Dietrichs explained. “But it’s highly probable that we will replace 3074 with the new proposal.”

Kim from Galaxy pointed out that this scenario illustrates how Ethereum's decentralized governance operates effectively.

“It facilitates constructive dialogue among various stakeholder groups in an open-source project, leading to a novel path forward with higher consensus,” Kim wrote.

Once Buterin engaged, progress was swift.
