Cahill Gordon & Reindel Supercharges Crypto Practice with Trio of Renowned Crypto-Native Lawyers

Global law firm Cahill Gordon & Reindel is augmenting its digital assets and emerging technology division by bringing on three specialized crypto lawyers. This strategic move aims to establish the firm as a comprehensive resource for cryptocurrency enterprises seeking legal and regulatory guidance.

Lewis Cohen, co-founder of the crypto-centric DLx Law, will join Cahill as a partner and co-chair of the rebranded practice group, CahillNXT, alongside former New York Southern District prosecutor Samson “Sam” Enzer. Additionally, DLx Law’s Gregory Strong from Delaware and Sarah Chen from New York will also join Cohen at Cahill as partners in the bolstered team.

Cahill is renowned on Wall Street, and its deepening involvement in the cryptocurrency sector underscores the growing demand for specialized crypto-legal expertise among traditional financial institutions.

“Reflecting on my childhood, the [Chicago] Bulls epitomized NBA excellence. Our goal is to replicate that success in the realm of crypto law,” Enzer remarked, likening the new team to a “crypto legal Dream Team.”

Enzer, who previously held a senior role in the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force at the SDNY, became part of Cahill in November 2021, where he set up the firm’s digital assets practice. This practice already serves high-profile clients like infamous Bitfinex launderer Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein and major cryptocurrency platforms such as Coinbase.

While Enzer specializes in dispute resolution, including litigation and government enforcement actions, he frequently sought Cohen and his team’s expertise on regulatory matters.

“Our professional paths have intertwined for years,” Enzer mentioned. “Given the surge in demand for our services along with Cohen’s regulatory proficiency, merging our capabilities seemed the most logical step.”

Enzer and Cohen believe that their collaboration will streamline access to comprehensive cryptocurrency legal advice for both current and prospective clients.

“Clients often face the challenge of not having a centralized resource for crypto-native legal advice, which complicates access and drives up costs as they have to engage multiple law firms,” Enzer explained.

Advantages of Crypto-Native Expertise

Cohen and Enzer emphasized the importance of having more crypto-native lawyers at Cahill, noting the significant value it brings to their clients.

“Many lawyers struggle with crypto-specific terms and concepts,” Cohen pointed out. “Our mission is not only to provide top-notch legal advice but also to educate. We are committed to incorporating the open-source blockchain ethos into our practice.”

Enzer also announced that a non-lawyer computer programmer from DLx Law will join CahillNXT as a consultant, aiming to effectively bridge the gap between legal frameworks and technological code.

“Large firms dabbling in crypto often lack technical understanding, making it harder for them to navigate regulatory complexities on behalf of their clients,” Enzer commented.

Cohen has been a key figure in the crypto-legal sector for several years. In 2022, Cohen, alongside Strong and Chen, co-authored a paper challenging the classification of cryptocurrencies as securities.

Future Prospects for DLx Law

Despite the departure of some key figures, DLx Law will continue operations, maintaining its dedication to existing clients and welcoming new ones, according to a recent press release.

Angela Angelovska-Wilson has been appointed Managing Partner of DLx Law.

“I fully support [her] leadership and am eager to see the continued success of DLX in its current form,” Cohen expressed.
