Ethereum Name Service (ENS) Labs, an influential organization in blockchain technology, recently put forth a critical proposal for an ambitious makeover of its protocol. Labelled “ENSv2,” the initiative aims to transition the project into a layer-2 solution, significantly streamlining transactions while anchoring them to the primary Ethereum blockchain. This move targets a reduction in execution costs, enhancing the overall efficiency and scalability of the network.
Enhancing Network Functionality with Advanced Tech
Khori Whittaker, the Executive Director at ENS Labs, revealed that their team is inclined towards adopting cutting-edge solutions from the layer-2 development toolkit provided by ZK Stack, a project spearheaded by Matter Labs. Notably, ZK Stack is the force behind the innovative layer-2 protocol, zkSync. This direction underscores an emerging trend where several protocols built on Ethereum, and various other first-layer blockchains, are evolving into layer-2 networks. These shifts are driven by the community’s demands for lower transaction costs and greater customization possibilities.
Earlier this month, for instance, the Celo blockchain ended its extensive eight-month search for a new layer-2 solution and decided on leveraging Optimism’s technology. This aligns with ENS Labs’ goal of pushing transaction costs down to near zero, enhancing the utilitarian scope of ENS names and profiles across a bustling network.
Ensuring User Ease with Simplified Addressing
Founded in 2017 by pioneers previously associated with the Ethereum Foundation, ENS has been pivotal in mapping complex cryptocurrency addresses to easily recognizable names like “Alice.eth.” Presently implemented as smart contracts on Ethereum, this redesign would sustain its foundational principles while leveraging advanced technological frameworks.
The exploration into layer-2 options included potential partnerships with leading tech developers like Arbitrum, Optimism, and zkSync. Eventually, the choice settled on ZK Stack by Matter Labs, which was particularly attractive due to its use of zero-knowledge proofs—a revolutionary cryptographic method providing heightened security and privacy.
The Buzz About Customizable Technology Stacks
Layer-2 solutions are renowned for offering tailor-made stacks, as seen with Polygon’s CDK hosting OKX’s “X Layer”, Optimism’s OP Stack which underpins Coinbase’s “Base”, and Worldcoin’s “Worldchain”, including the move by Celo. As ENS Labs evaluated these exciting possibilities, decisive factors such as privacy and security stood at the forefront of their criteria.
Governance and Forward Steps
The upgrade proposal has been put before the ENS DAO, the decentralized governance entity of the ENS protocol. They will engage in an in-depth review and discussion over the coming two months. Following this interactive period and receiving the DAO’s approval, the redevelopment will commence vigorously.
