Sibling Scammers Exposed: $25 Million Ethereum Heist Unraveled with Fraud Charges
The U.S. Department of Justice has apprehended two individuals for exploiting the Ethereum blockchain, resulting in the theft of $25 million in cryptocurrency within a mere 12 seconds, as detailed in an indictment unveiled on Wednesday.
The indictment accuses Anton Peraire-Bueno, aged 24, from Boston, and James Pepaire-Bueno, aged 28, from New York, of engaging in conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
This case is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first criminal action by the U.S. government in connection to the contentious practice of Maximal Extractable Value (MEV). MEV involves blockchain validators previewing pending transactions to gain additional profit by strategically influencing the order of transactions on the blockchain.
According to the indictment released on Wednesday, the Pepaire-Bueno brothers took advantage of MEV-boost, a tool employed by most validators running the Ethereum blockchain, to execute their fraudulent scheme.
