Trump Vows to Pardon Silk Road Founder Ross Ulbricht in Potential Second Term
Trump’s Pledge: A Second Chance for Ross Ulbricht
In a recently announced commitment, former President Donald J. Trump has declared that should he return to office, he intends to grant Ross Ulbricht clemency by reducing his life sentence to time already served. This striking declaration was made during his address at the Libertarian National Convention held in Washington, D.C. With over a decade of imprisonment behind him, Trump emphasized, “Day 1, Ross Ulbricht will walk free if you support my return to the presidency.”
Earlier the same day, Trump voiced strong encouragement for the cryptocurrency sector through a post on Truth Social. Outlined in his message was a robust endorsement: ”I remain highly supportive and optimistic about cryptocurrency ventures and all facets linked to this prospering sector. It’s crucial that our nation pioneers in this arena without settling for anything less than leadership.” Furthermore, he contrasted his stance with that of President Joe Biden by claiming, “Biden’s approach seems to favor letting the crypto industry wither incrementally – not on my watch!”
Rallying the Libertarian Base
Trump’s pronouncement regarding Ulbricht echoed powerfully among those in attendance at the convention, with supporters voicing their approval and brandishing “Free Ross” placards. Since his 2015 conviction, where Ulbricht received two life terms plus 40 years without parole for operating the Silk Road marketplace—a platform notorious for its role in anonymous transactions primarily involving illicit drugs—his case has sparked significant debate. Advocates argue that the severe punishment is an excessive governmental encroachment and an infringement on constitutional rights.
Ulbricht’s plight has not only rallied Libertarians but also garnered the attention of some digital privacy and cryptocurrency advocates, painting Ulbricht as a figurehead of overzealous federal punishment. Despite anticipation and pleas from supporters during Trump’s last days in office in January 2021, Ulbricht was not among those granted relief, which included 73 pardons and 70 commutations, though high-profile figures like Ripple board member Ken Kurson were.
Trump’s Evolving Crypto Stance
In addition to his headline-grabbing pledge for Ulbricht, Trump did not shy away from broader remarks concerning cryptocurrency at the convention. He pledged to dismantle Joe Biden’s perceived attempts to obliterate the crypto sector, highlighted his support for individual crypto custody rights, and declared his intention to protect U.S. interests against regulatory overreach by figures such as Elizabeth Warren. Trump underlined his commitment: “To America’s fifty million crypto users, your digital assets, like bitcoin, will remain secure from undue interference under my administration.”
Notably, Trump’s shift toward a more crypto-friendly posture marks a significant pivot from his earlier skepticism, now championing for the continued innovation and adoption of cryptocurrencies within the U.S., much to the delight of many in the sector.
This firm stance on libertarian values, personal freedoms, particularly in the context of digital assets and financial dealings, aims to resonate deeply with a growing base of crypto enthusiasts and libertarians alike as Trump eyes the presidency once more. With promises of reform and liberation for influential figures like Ulbricht, Trump’s campaign message is clear: a return to power could significantly alter the current trajectory of U.S. digital policy and criminal justice related to technological advancements and freedoms.
