Unleashing the Power of Arbitrum’s ARB and Polygon’s MATIC: Ethereum’s Dencun Upgrade Takes Off
Layer 2 Cryptocurrencies See Mixed Performance Following Ethereum’s Dencun Upgrade
Cryptocurrencies associated with the Ethereum network experienced a mixed performance on Wednesday as the highly-anticipated Dencun upgrade went live. This update enables cheaper transactions on layer-2 (L2) protocols, making them more accessible to a wider range of users.
Leading the gains were Polygon (MATIC), Arbitrum (ARB), and Metis (METIS) which saw increases of 8-10% before the upgrade. They did, however, slightly retract their gains after the upgrade went into effect. Still, they outperformed the broader market as represented by the CoinDesk 20 Index (CD20), which only saw a 0.7% gain over the past 24 hours.
Other L2 tokens such as Optimism (OP) also saw a rally of nearly 10%, but experienced a larger decline before the Dencun upgrade and only saw a modest 2% increase on the day. Immutable X (IMX) and Celo (CELO) both saw a decline of 6% and 7%, respectively, while Ethereum’s native token, ether (ETH), remained relatively unchanged just below $4,000.
The Dencun upgrade, considered the most significant milestone for the Ethereum ecosystem in almost a year, introduced a new way of storing data on the blockchain, specifically designed to address its tendency towards congestion. With this change, transaction costs on L2 networks are forecasted to be reduced to just a few cents, which is expected to drive more activity and attract additional applications.
However, despite the strong performance of ETH and layer-2 tokens leading up to the Dencun upgrade, analysts at QCP Capital have noted that there may be a potential for correction as the hype around the upgrade diminishes and the likelihood of a spot ether ETF being approved in the U.S. in the near future decreases. A correction in the crypto market typically indicates a decline of at least 10%.
In conclusion, the Dencun upgrade has brought much anticipation and excitement to the Ethereum community, and its implementation is seen as a game-changer in terms of improving the network’s scalability and transaction costs. However, the market may see some correction in the short term as the hype wears off and other factors come into play. As always, this is not financial advice and is for informational purposes only.
