In an innovative collaboration, leveraging Digimarc’s expertise, a revolutionary use of distributed ledger technology (DLT) has been introduced to monitor and streamline the recycling process of plastics. This initiative primarily focuses on agricultural plastic waste, transforming it into bioplastics for consumer use in items such as shopping bags. The implementation includes Digital Product Passports (DPPs) covering both intermediate goods and final products to ensure B2B and B2C verification. The system adheres to the GS1 EPCIS 2.0 standard which records supply chain activities, storing proofs on the IOTA ledger to substantiate claims regarding product origins.
Tackling Agricultural Plastic Waste
Plastic mulch films play a pivotal role in agriculture by suppressing weeds, conserving moisture in soil, and retaining methyl bromide which is crucial yet harmful for ozone layers if not managed properly. Unfortunately, this leads to environmental degradation due to considerable plastic residues that frequently end up in landfills or contaminate ecosystems as pollutants.
Recycling these materials into biodegradable products appears promising; however, complexities arise due to multiple stakeholders involvement and technological requirements making recycling processes elaborate and expensive while also being bound by diverse regulations globally. For instance in 2022 alone as reported by OECD approximately only 9% of plastic waste was recycled with about 22% being improperly managed.
