Concurrently, groundwork for the IOTA EVM’s introduction is progressing satisfactorily, with its initial phase already enriching the chain with pivotal tools and apps, poised for an ecosystem-wide expansion.
This progress report outlines a strong start to what promises to be a year full of ambition and substantial advancements.
Technical Progress and Research Innovations
The Core IOTA Team perseveres in its dedication to upgrade the core protocol, focusing on injecting these improvements into the reference node software. This period has witnessed smooth advancements towards the implementation of IOTA 2.0, with the team enhancing the performance of iota-core node software and refining its API to better serve the SDK, explorer, and wallet teams. A culture of rigorous testing under diverse conditions is maintained to optimize protocol parameters and rectify any issues.
The Client Libraries Team has played a crucial role, implementing all 2.0 TIP concepts within the Rust SDK and making them accessible across Nodejs, Wasm, and Python bindings. Efforts continue to support the Firefly, through debugging, test enhancements, and codebase optimization.
Developing side-chain smart contracts with EVM/Wasm capabilities, the L2 Smart Contracts Team has made strides in adapting the IOTA Smart Contracts for the future IOTA 2.0 ecosystem. The team’s endeavors also include creating a Legacy migration chain for the seamless transfer of pre-Chrysalis funds and preparing for the IOTA EVM deployment.
Developer Experience Improvements have been significant, with the team focusing on updating and creating tools and content to smooth the onboarding process for developers, particularly around the EVM and the unique protocols of IOTA Smart Contracts. The IOTA Sandbox has been introduced as a comprehensive tool for both local development and CI/CD testing.
The Tooling Team is at the forefront of developing essential infrastructure applications. This quarter saw the development of Firefly Canary and Explorer versions compatible with IOTA 2.0, the launch of a new IOTA Legacy Migration Tool, and continuous enhancements to ensure the robustness of the Firefly IOTA, Firefly Shimmer, and Explorer for the end-users.
The Identity Team introduced innovations like selective disclosure credentials and support for a robust revocation mechanism, thereby simplifying the integration of IOTA Identity into various application stacks significantly through the experimental Identity gRPC service.
With an eye on maintaining and enhancing infrastructure services, the DevOps Team has been pivotal, conducting a successful IOTA 2.0 network deployment and establishing a test network for the iota-core evaluation.
The SUSEE Team has embarked on designing scalable solutions for secure data transmission in sensor networks, integrating SUSEE nodes into the LoRaWAN communication infrastructure and refining tooling for sensor initialization and message decoding.
Ending the quarter on a high note, the EBSI Taskforce concluded its Phase 2B deliverables for the EU Blockchain Pre-Commercial Procurement, awaiting subsequent results.
Expanding the Ecosystem and Community Engagement
The Ecosystem Team has notably grown to meet the increasing demands of new initiatives, highlighting the IOTA Foundation‘s commitment to fostering its ecosystem and spurring innovative projects. This period showcased the successful development and launch of the IOTA Grants concept and strategic preparations for the IOTA EVM launch, ensuring a smooth rollout.
Governance Activities within the IOTA and Shimmer networks have been bustling, with the annual Tangle Community Treasury elections concluding in March, setting the stage for the next steps come April.
The Shimmer and IOTA (EVM) Ecosystem continues to thrive, with the community actively engaging with DeFi apps within the Shimmer EVM. The preparatory phase for the IOTA EVM launch saw extensive efforts from builder teams and the community, marking an eager anticipation for the public launch.
The introduction of Touchpoint, evolving into an IOTA Builders Hub, signifies growing alignments and continuous expansions to support the IOTA EVM launch.
Legal, Regulatory Affairs, and Sustainability Efforts
The Legal and Regulatory Affairs Department has been actively working towards making the UAE DLT Foundation fully operational and ensuring network compatibility with Islamic finance requirements. Significant progress has also been made in advancing the Web3 Identity Verification project.
The Social Impact and Sustainability Team has kicked off the year with community engagements and contributions to the INATBA Social Impact & Sustainability Working Group, focusing on setting priorities for 2024.
