Untangle Care — Milestone #4

The 4th and last milestone of the “Untangle Care” project was concluded. With this article we would like to share first and foremost, a summary of the tools built and that are now openly available for anyone interested. In the second part of the article, we provide a more detailed explanation of the project goals, achievements, challenges, and next steps.

Recapping, the goal of “Untangle Care” was to develop IOTA-based tools to help healthcare data to flow between citizen-based solutions (e.g. Personal Health Records) and healthcare institution-based solutions (e.g. Electronic Medical Records) in a secure, seamless and healthcare-interoperable way (using Fast Healthcare Interoperable Resources — FHIR).

“Untangle Care” Project Overview

IOTA, in particular its MAM Layer allows, on one hand, the secure transition and storage of individual health information on the IOTA distributed ledger. On the other hand, it allows the free and open flow of data, potentially breaking existing healthcare information silos. HL7 FHIR allows formatting the data in an interoperable standard so that other healthcare stakeholders can more easily read it and reuse it.

Main project deliverables entailed:

  • an open source MAM FHIR integration code – the layer that keeps track of MAM streams and is able to do all the instance/type level interactions with the FHIR resources on these MAM streams
  • a MAM FHIR API – making the FHIR functionality available via REST API
  • a web interface – dashboard to manage patients’ data uploaded to the tangle using the FHIR API

Secondary deliverables included:

  • encryption / key exchange – using NTRU to establish a save channel between two parties
  • an open source Xamarin and IOTA based Chat App – allowing to send messages on the Tangle, encrypted with NTRU (see Palantir)
  • IOTA based logging system
  • an IOTA C# Port – enabling C# developers to create applications connected to IOTA

In our view, this project and its deliverables will be a step forward for future projects from the IOTA e-Health community to, on one hand, more easily and securely exchange healthcare data and, on the other hand, put more users in control of their own health data. All these solutions are open-source and free to use.
